Yulia Skripal “lucky to be alive” after Salisbury nerve agent attack
Yulia Skripal has spoken for the first time since the nerve agent attack in Salisbury saying she was lucky to have survived.
She survived an assassination attempt that UK authorities blame on Russia. But the daughter of one of Russia's most famous spies says she wants to return to her country “in the longer term”, despite the poisoning.
“The fact that a nerve agent was used to do this is shocking,” Skripal told Reuters in an exclusive statement. “My life has been turned upside down.”
Yulia and her father Sergei Skripal, a former colonel in Russian military intelligence who betrayed dozens of agents to Britain’s MI6 foreign spy service, were found unconscious on a public bench in the British city of Salisbury on March 4.
Yulia Skripal, 33, was in a coma for 20 days.
“I woke to the news that we had both been poisoned,” Skripal said in her first media appearance since the poisoning. She contacted Reuter..
Woman convicted of acid attack jailed for life
The ex-girlfriend of Mark van Dongen has been jailed for life after being found guilty of throwing a corrosive substance with intent.
Berlinah Wallace was convicted following a three week trial at Bristol Crown Court.
Wallace threw sulphuric acid over Mark van Dongen in 2015.
The 29-year-old suffered extensive injuries and later took his own life by euthanasia in January 2017.
While a jury concluded she deliberately threw the acid at Mr van Dongen, they found her not guilty of both murder and manslaughter.
Today (23/5), Wallace was given the maximum sentence available to the judge for the offence.
Yesterday, Mr van Dongen’s father’s victim impact statement was read to the court.
In it, Kess van Dongen said: “The fact that Mark, a 29-year old man and recent graduate, decided to commit euthanasia, says something about the condition he was in and the amount of pain that he had been suffering. He said: ‘Dad, I am tired of fighti..
Emery confirmed as new Arsenal manager
Arsenal named Spaniard Unai Emery as their first new manager for 22 years following Arsene Wenger's departure.
The club's website said the 46-year-old would join as head coach, having spent the last two years at Paris St Germain.
Announcing the appointment, Arsenal's chief executive Ivan Gazidis said: “Unai has an outstanding track record of success throughout his career, has developed some of the best young talent in Europe and plays an exciting, progressive style of football that fits Arsenal perfectly.
“His hard-working and passionate approach and his sense of values on and off the pitch make him the ideal person to take us forward.”
Frenchman Wenger's final season in charge, having taken over in 1996, ended in disappointment with Arsenal finishing sixth in the Premier League — missing out on Champions League qualification for the second season in a row.

Search to be called off for missing Malaysian Airlines flight
A private search by a U.S. firm for Malaysia Airlines flightMH370, which went missing in 2014 in one of the world's biggest aviation mysteries, will end on Tuesday.
Flight MH370, carrying 239 people, disappeared en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8, 2014.
Malaysia had agreed in January to pay Houston-based Ocean Infinity up to $70 million if it found the plane during a 90-day search in the southern Indian Ocean.
The hunt for the Boeing 777 was previously expected to end in June, as the 90-day agreement did not cover time taken for refuelling and resupplying search vessel Seabed Constructor.
However, Ocean Infinity had finished scouring its targeted search area in April and had requested an extension until May 29, Loke said.
“This morning I raised this (request) in cabinet and we agreed to extend to May 29,” he told reporters in Putrajaya, Malaysia's administrative capital. Asked it that me..
Environment Agency calls for action on water efficiency
Rivers and wildlife could be left without sufficient water unless action is taken to reduce water use and wastage, according to an Environment Agency report published today.
The first major report on water resources in England states that climate change and demand from a growing population are the biggest pressures on the availability of water. Without action to increase supply, reduce demand and cut down on wastage, many areas in England could see significant supply deficits by 2050 – particularly in the south east.
The State of the Environment: Water Resources report highlights unsustainable levels of water abstraction, leakage from water companies – currently estimated at 3 billion litres per day – and demand from industry and the public as three of the issues to tackle in order to protect the water environment.
Emma Howard Boyd, Chair of the Environment Agency said:
We need to change our attitudes to water use. It ..

Marks & Spencer say they must accelerate change as profits plummet
Marks & Spencer said on Wednesday it urgently had to modernise or risk fading away as it reported a second straight decline in annual profit and booked a 321 million pounds charge for a store closure programme.
The 134-year-old M&S faces unrelenting competition from supermarkets, fashion chains like Zara, H&M and Primark, as well as online giant Amazon, while efforts to revitalise its business are being hampered by ongoing pressure on UK consumers' spending power.
M&S reset its strategy in November, two months after retail veteran Archie Norman joined as chairman, detailing a five-year programme of store closures and relocations, and moves to make its misfiring food business more competitive.
On Tuesday M&S said it would close 100 UK stores by 2022, further accelerating the plan as it strives to make at least a third of sales online.
M&S, one of the best known names in British retail, said it made a pre..
Donald Trump casts doubt on planned summit with North Korean leader
U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday there was a “substantial chance” his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will not take place as planned on June 12 amid concerns that Kim is resistant to giving up his nuclear weapons.
Trump raised doubts about the Singapore summit in talks with South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who came to Washington to urge Trump not to let a rare opportunity with reclusive North Korea slip away.
If the summit is called off or fails, it would be a major blow to what Trump supporters hope will be the biggest diplomatic achievement of his presidency, and a huge disappointment for the president himself.
“There's a very substantial chance … it won’t work out. And that’s OK,” Trump told reporters. “That doesn’t mean it won’t work out over a period of time. But it may not work out for June 12. But there is a good chance that we’ll have the meeting.”
Trump said whether..
Tesco to close one of its websites
Tesco will close its non-food website Tesco Direct in July, having decided it could not make the loss-making business profitable.
The group said it will focus on a single online platform for groceries, general merchandise and clothing – Tesco.com.
Tesco Direct will cease trading on July 9 and, as part of this, a distribution centre at Milton Keynes, south east England, which handles the website's orders will also close.
It said the decision means 500 workers across the business will be at risk of redundancy.
“Tesco has conducted a detailed review of Tesco Direct…and has concluded that, despite its best efforts, there is no route to profitability for this small, loss-making part of the business,” it said.
The firm said it would still sell a range of general merchandise – in stores and online atTesco.com.
Tesco.com already sells items such as toys, home and cookware and would build-up its offer.
“This decision has been a very diffi..
Kane named England captain for World Cup campaign
Harry Kane will wear the captain's armband for England at next month's World Cup, ending speculation about who would lead Gareth Southgate's squad in Russia.
The announcement was made in a video published on Twitter in which Southgate said Tottenham Hotspur's Kane had “outstanding leadership” qualities.
England's last full-time captain was Wayne Rooney but the armband has been worn by several players since the former Manchester United forward lost his place in the squad.
Southgate has often played down the significance of the position, preferring to nurture a collective leadership within the team, but Kane will be the figurehead as England go into their 15th World Cup.
Kane, who scored 30 Premier League goals for Tottenham this past season, has 23 caps for England and netted 12 times.
“For me the key for a captain is that you set the tone every day in everything that we do, the way we train, the wa..
